Showcasing our expertise in merging new construction and rehabilitation – while embodying a sensitivity toward the community and its historic relationship to the previous church
Located between East 126th Street and East 127th Street, the proposed development was aimed to support the parish’s goal of a new ministry for the current and future members, while also attracting and supporting the Harlem community. The proposed 79-foot-tall development was a great opportunity to showcase our expertise in merging new construction and rehabilitation – while embodying a sensitivity toward the community and its historic relationship to the previous church.
The original building was a noted historical landmark in Harlem, but had fallen into disrepair and was near collapse. To pay homage to its history, we documented the building and carefully curated the salvaging of the original stained-glass windows, which were repurposed at the entrance of the new sanctuary as a tribute to the church’s history and former home. This was essential to honoring the legacy of the church while providing a new and functional space for the Harlem community.
